Deadstock e pelle circolare: il valore dei materiali secondo Nani®

When a material deserves a second story

Not every piece of leather selected for a collection is destined to become a finished product. Some retain all of their exceptional quality yet no longer have a place in the project they were originally chosen for. Not because they have lost their value, but because a production comes to an end, a design evolves, or one collection makes way for the next.

Today, the fashion industry increasingly refers to these materials as deadstock: unused resources that can be given a new purpose through circular practices designed to extend their life and preserve their value.

When Nani was founded, however, we didn't yet know this term. What we did recognise was the value of those leathers—their quality, character, and potential—where others simply saw the end of a project.

From the very beginning, we chose to work with Italian leather sourced from Tuscany, where the tradition of leather craftsmanship continues to thrive. For us, the value of a material does not end with its first purpose. It continues every time it finds the right project.

Today, this vision aligns naturally with the principles of circularity in the leather industry. One example is Gucci-Up, the initiative featured by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, which gives unused fabrics and leathers a new purpose while preserving their value.

Beyond the name now used to describe this philosophy, what matters most is the belief that inspired Nani from the very beginning: the end of a collection is never the end of a material's value. It is simply the beginning of a new story.
